For many years HSBC was based at Molesey Boat Club, on the River Thames near Hampton Court Palace. Although it lasted less than a decade, the Association provided a basis for what later developed into the state of Tennessee and likely influenced other frontier governments in the TransAppalachian region. In 1778, after North Carolina annexed the Watauga settlements, the Watauga Association was replaced by a county government. Founded in 1913, the Monticello Association is a nonprofit organization of the lineal descendants of Thomas Jefferson, 3rd president of the United States. Jefferson was the designer, builder, owner and principal resident of Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia.
