What are some tips for reeling in line on an open faced spinning reel?

How to reel in really smooth and not go fast then slow then fast then slow.

What if you have small hands?

Lay the spool of new line on the floor with the label up. This is critical. Attach the line to the spool of the reel and start to wind the line onto the reel. Apply tension with your fingers allowing the line to be placed onto the reel in a packed tight manner. After about 25-30 revolutions if you notice that you are experiencing line twist when you allow slack between your reel and your spool on the floor then turn your spool that is on the floor over. You shouldn’t have to do this but it really depends on the direction that your reel turns. The concept is to have the line come off the spool the same direction as it is going on the reel. What you are trying to eliminate is line twist which is a major factor in weakening your line. If you fish out of a boat after you put new line on your reel it is a good practice to trail about 50-100 yds of line with nothing tied on it behind your boat and then reel it back in while pinching it between your fingers in front of your reel. This will get rid of all of the twist in your line. I do this occasionally when I am using lures that tend to twist my line. There are several places on the Web that may explain this procedure better than I have but what you need to take away from this is that whatever you do you need to get as much of the line twist out of your line as possible. One more thing……….DO NOT use your reel handle to close the bail on your reel. Close the bail with your hand after you have made a cast…………..when you close the bail with the reel handle you put a 1/4 turn twist in your line each time. Over a period of a fishing day this will add up to a fairly good kink in your line. Hope this helps and good luck on the water.
