Jig Walleye Crappie
Ice fishing question I have all the basic down. I was wondering if anyone had any northern pike tips?
and pan fish like blue gill or crappie tips and walleye tips. How to use tip ups? and how to jig for pike and what baits to use and what kind of pole do i need and line if anyone can help me thanks.
Northern Pike- Look for edges of weed-lines in 8-15 FT of water. Drill one hole just inside the weed-line and drop a small minnow/Crappie Minnow down deep. Just OUTSIDE the weed-line drill another hole and drop a Shiner or Sucker minnow 3-4 FT deep. A medium action Ice-rod with Berkley Fireline 4/10 or Berkley Ice line equaling 6-10 LB should be fine for Northerns.
Walleye- Walleye also like edges of weed-lines in 8-15 Ft of water. Other areas to try are offshore structure ,(like rubble, rip rap, submerged reefs), where there is an abundance of small Perch. Find schools of small Perch and your odds on catching Walleye increase. Even under the Ice Walleye tend to feed during low-light times; Dawn, Dusk & Night-time. Use 4″ Shiners and Fathead Minnows for Walleye.
Bluegill- Bluegill can be tough to find if you don’t have a camera or Vexilar. Your “best bet” is to find your local lakes thickest weed-bed and fish near that. Bluegill tend to dig deep into weeds during the day and hit the edges of weed-lines right before dark. Use lite line (like 2-3LB diameter) and Meal worms, Maggots, and small Earthworms/Red Wigglers.
Crappie- Go to your local baitshop and ask where the best Crappie lake is located, (some lakes don’t support Crappie well)! Once you know what lake is a Crappie lake, go to the Dept Of Natural Resources web-page and get a map of said lake. Find deep water structures and drop-offs. Once at the lake, look for where all the ice shantys/ice houses are distributed. If they are all in one section it would be WISE to start fishing in that area. Crappie is one of the most sought-after fish through the ice and can usually be found by “following the crowd”. Crappie Minnows, Ice Jigs, Meal Worms, Red Wigglers, Maggots.
Tip-ups- Every tip up is different. Follow the instruction on the box, (or if you don’t HAVE the instruction’s look for them on-line). A good idea with tip-ups is to use a larger bait, (like Shiners), and put it within site of your portable house or current Crappie fishing hole. Keep an eye out for the flag!
