High Speed Boat Crashes

high speed boat crashes
Could somebody please help me learn how to do these? Im not sure how to do either one!?

1.) A boat has a mass of 6800 kg. Its engines generate a drive force of 4200 N, due west, while the wind exerts a force of 950 N, due east, and the water exerts a resistive force of 1200 N due east. What is the magnitude and direction of the boat’s acceleration?

2.) Airplane flight recorders must be able to survive catastrophic crashes. Therefore, they are typically encased in crash-resistant steel or titanium boxes that are subjected to rigorous testing. One of the tests is an impact shock test, in which the box must survive being thrown at high speeds against a barrier. A 41 kg box is thrown at a speed of 205 m/s and is brought to a halt in a collision that lasts for a time of 7.0 ms. What is the magnitude of the average net force that acts on the box during the colision?

Thanks!!!

1) This problem involves the use of vectors and newton’s second law. The second law tells you that the sum of all forces acting on a single object equals the massxacceleration of that object. In equation terms:

Σ F = m x a
here, the forces are the force due to the engine (West)
the force due to the wind (east)
the force due to the water( east)

add these up, being sure you use signs to take into account the directions; if we set the West as the positive direction, the sum of our forces is:

Σ F= 4200N – 950N-1200N = 2050N directed to the west

This force = m x a , so a =2050N/6800kg = 0.3 m/s²

2) In the second one, you again use F=ma. In this question, you are given mass (41kg), and must determine acceleration from the information given. Then you can solve for F.

to find acceleration, use the information that the box went from a speed of 205 m/s to zero in 7×10^(-3) s. The acceleration experienced by the box is:

a = Δv/time = (0m/s-205m/s)/7×10^(-3)s =
2.93×10^4 m/s/s

the force on the box is then mxa, or
F=41kg x 2.93×10^4 m/s/s = 1.2×10^6 N

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In 2002, two large airtankers a i130 Hercules and a P4Y2 Privateer crashed about a month apart while performing aerial firefighting operations. These crashes prompted a review of the maintenance and use of the entire U.S. large airtanker fleet. Ultimately, the whole fleet (33 aircraft in all) was grounded, dramatically reducing the resources available to fight major wildfires. Both aircraft were owned by Hawkins Powers Aviation of Greybull, Wyoming and operated under contract to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The crashes occurred in one of the worst fire seasons in the last half century, one in which 73,000 fires burned approximately 7.2 million acres (29,000 km)of land. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles PT Boats were a variety of motor torpedo boat (hull classification symbol PT, for Patrol Torpedo ), a small, fast vessel used by the United States Navy in World War II to attack larger surface ships. The PT boat squadrons were nicknamed the mosquito fleet. The original preWorld War I torpedo boats were designed with displacementtype hulls. They displaced up to 300 tons and the top speed was 25 to 27 knots.The PT boats used in World War II were built using the planingtype hull form developed for racing boats. They were much smaller (3075 tons) and faster (3540 knots). Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Upward Crashes: Fractures Topoi: Musil, Kiefer, Darger explores the perception of altitude as a locus of fraction, from the inception of modernity to the present.Citing examples from literature, art, theory and media, it examines the paradoxical trope of a fall or crash into the heights, from a spatial, visual and ethical perspective. Tracing the trajectory of the fractured self in pursuit of high grounds it discusses, among others, works by H lderlin, Musil, Kafka, Kiefer, Darger and Viola. Altitude is not interpreted as infinite space but as a place of appearance, akin to Platonic chora a suspension, a temporary exile outside of matter, where the subject is thrown in force field of tensions that organizes and evokes images, memories, emotions, and occasionally trauma. Paola PigliaVeroneses Upward Crashes … fractures the classical topoi, or conceptual starting places, of rationality, as she exemplifies these fractures, or rather exstases, in the work of Musil, Kiefer, and Darger. Paolas is a major contribution to the literature. A must read Victor J.
