Floating Minnow Lure
Any ideas for these type of conditions?
Well, it has been in the single digits mostly this winter and it going up to 43 degress ans i know the fish will be active. so what lures do u recommend i use? I was thinking on the lines of a xrap or a floating minnow jerked , or a mepps spinner bait. Any ideas?
Obviously I have NO IDEA where you are or what generally works on your lake.
But there are some basic lures and presentations that work well in super cold conditions.
(Ugh- you didn’t exactly say you were targeting Bass, but you DID mention an “X-rap” so I’m assuming your huntin’ ole Bucketmouth or Smally.)
#1. A single day of super warm weather may or may not change the existing Bass pattern. One warm day won’t make a huge difference in the water temp. And warmer water is always a good thing (in the Winter) when Bass fishing. As a general rule the warmest water on any given lake will be in the North West – North. The NW-N corner is shielded from cold-fronts and gets the most amount of Sun during the Winter months. Does this mean the fish will be there? No. But it’s a good place to start. Think about purchasing a cheap compass to keep in your tackle box for finding the N- NW corner.
#2. “Slow and suspending” is always your “best” retrieve when fishing Bass in Mid-Winter.
Also, the average forage in most lakes during this period is small so it’s important to downsize from what you usually fish with. It’s also a good idea to fish in and around live (green) weedbeds. “Green” weeds give off O2 which can be low during the Winter season.
#3. Fluro rules the cold water season- Flurocarbon has the same refractive index as water and is virtually invisible underwater. Bass are generally more “line shy” in the Winter months because colder water is usually more “clear” because there is fewer phytoplankton and weeds floating in the water. Basically- you need a leader of Fluro. Try a 10-12LB leader for light line applications; 12-14LB for heavier applications.
Here are some good lure ideas for Mid-Winter cold water Bass:
a. Rapala Husky Jerk HJ-8, (or HJ-6)
b. 1/8 OZ Single Colorado Spinnerbait
c. 4″ Shakey Worm
d. 1/4 OZ Blue Fox Minnow Spin- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15446____SearchResults
e. “Weightless Worm” -(Use a typical Texas Rig without a weight)
