Crappie Trout Steelhead

Fishing the Niagara River, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

An angler’s paradise, the Niagara River is considered one of North America’s premier fishing destinations with particular emphasis placed on fishing the lower river for Steelhead in the fall and winter. In fact if you “Google it”, you will find countless articles written by numerous world renowned fisherpersons on the subject.

The upside to Steelhead fishing in the fall/winter is that when you catch one you get to spend 40 minutes in the cold and damp weather fighting a 30 pound trout that doesn’t want to get into your boat. This also may be considered as downside, along with the expense of either operating your own boat or going with a charter. Don’t get me wrong, every couple of years I get a hankerin’ for some real fishin’ and spring for the $100 charter. I truly do enjoy the experience however for me, more often then not, fishing the Niagara River means spending a relaxing summer day fishing for Bass from shore.

As often as I can, I pack a sandwich, a little something refreshing to drink, light tackle and my Mepps Spinners and head for Queenston.

Queenston is a small village on the lower Niagara River about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of the Horseshoe Falls. In Queenston there is a public boat launch where you can park your car and trek upstream along the river bank about 50 meters or so to a section where the river bends a little to the east creating a fairly calm bay on an otherwise turbulent river. This is where I go fishin’. The Smallmouth are abundant and with a little patience, you will hook and land the feisty little fighters’ even midday when you would least expect it.

If you decide fishing the lower river may be a good way to spend a lazy summer day, bring sunscreen and lots of drinking water and if you bring the kids make sure they are wearing life jackets. The Niagara River can be dangerous, it is very turbulent and the water level can change abruptly due to routine adjustments at the hydro electric dam.

Following is a list of all the game fish species abundant in the Niagara River.

Zone 19. The Upper Niagara River is designated as part of Ontario’s Zone 19 which is upstream from “the falls” to the Peace Bridge.

Zone 20. The Lower Niagara River is designated as part of Ontario’s Zone 20 which is downstream from “the falls” to Lake Ontario.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Pomoxis is a genus of freshwater fish in the sunfish family of order Perciformes. The type species is P. annularis, the white crappie; or P. nigromaculatus, the black crappie. The common name crappie, refers to either of the Pomoxis species, both of which are popular game fish. Both species of crappie as adults feed predominantly on smaller species, including the young of their own predators. They have diverse diets, however, including zooplankton, insects, and crustaceans. By day, crappie tend to be less active and to concentrate around weed beds or submerged objects, such as logs and boulders; they feed especially at dawn and dusk, moving then into open water or approaching the shore Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 92 Publication Date: 2010/08/04 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.22 inches

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a species of salmonid native to tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America as well as much of the central, western, eastern, and especially the northern portions of the United States. The ocean going (anadromous) form (including those returning for spawning) are known as steelhead, (Canada and the United States) or ocean trout (Australia). The species has been introduced for food or sport to at least 45 countries, and every continent except Antarctica. In some of these locations, such as Southern Europe, Australia and South America, they have had very serious negative impacts on upland native fish species, either by eating them, outcompeting them, transmitting contagious diseases, or hybridization with closely related species and subspecies that are native to western North America. There were just too many ways that things could go wrong and they did. Plus it was just a wild idea. But despite a series of setbacks and some long odds seven Bozeman men managed to helicopter in to a remote British Columbia river and catch steelhead on dry flies while making a documentary film of the unusual adventure. We got really really really lucky said Jesse Atkins 29 one of five Bozeman anglers featured in the film. The main fishing concept alone was sketchy catching steelhead on dry flies. Steelhead are searunning rainbow trout that are known to be finicky where fish caught are measured in hours spent angling not in numbers hauled in.And the idea that the wild fish would rise to eat hatching bugs although documented in angling literature is seldom seen and may never have been captured on film.
