Tales of the Fishing Beach: Growing Up in Old Alaska

Tales of the Fishing Beach: Growing Up in Old Alaska

$29.85

Janette Riehle grew up in a world that most people cannot even imagineits a world that we oldtimers up here sometimes call either the old Alaska or the real Alaska. And its a world that we will unfortunately never see again. Sled dogs, moose meat, fresh trout, log cabins and 7yearold girls trapping beaver are all part of this delightful, hardscrabble romp through the wilds of Alaska in the 1940s and 1950s. Ron Dalby, former editor of Alaska Magazine and author of Guide to the Alaska Highway. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, as the oldest of four children, Janette Riehle writes about the world in which she grew up. In 1945, her family began fishing for salmon on Cook Inlet. During Janettes next seven years, they lived on their fish site during the summers and on their remote trapline for the rest of the year, except for three winters which were spent in Palmer. Those unforgettable days were a time of enjoying childhood games and adventures, escaping dangerous close calls, living in a tent or a cabin, harvesting game, traveling by foot, boat, and plane, and learning to depend on their own resources and on one another in order to survive the sometimes harsh Alaskan wilderness. Janette is an ordained minister and a retired professional counselor. She and her husband, Wallace, have been married for 50 years and have three grown children and eight grandchildren. Lobster Fishing

Lobster Fishing

$70.1

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Lobster fishing is the commercial or recreational harvesting of marine lobsters, spiny lobsters or crayfish. Lobster fishing is part of the larger fishing industry. It uses tools such as boats, navigation, and other fishing technology. Fishing technology specific to the lobster industry generally includes traps, either rectangularshaped or halfcylinders, once made from oak but are now primarily made from wire mesh covered with a thick layer of plastic to reduce oxidation of the metal. Lobster traps, or pot warp, are connected to each other and to a buoy with rope. Sometimes there is a floater called a toggle tied between the trap and the buoy to keep the rope tight so as to reduce the possibility of the rope wrapping around rocks on the bottom and becoming stuck. Shetland Bus Boats

Shetland Bus Boats

$93.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Shetland bus was the name given to a clandestine special operations group that made a permanent link between Shetland, Scotland, and Germanoccupied Norway. From mid1941 until the end of the war it operated a number of vessels, mostly Norwegian fishing boats. Germany launched their invasion of Norway on 9 April 1940, and despite the efforts of the Norwegians and the British, the Germans controlled most of the country by the beginning of May. Only a few weeks after the occupation began, the first boats of an armada of fishing vessels and other boats began to arrive in Shetland. Many of these boats made several journeys across the North Sea carrying refugees. The boats were of many types and shapes, but most of those later used as the Shetland Bus, were from 50 to 70foot (21 m), with two masts and equipped with a 30 to 70 hp (52 kW) singlecylinder semidiesel engine, which made the characteristic tonktonk sound. They had a maximum speed of 9 knots (17 km/h). Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
